Course Description

The Region 8 CIL In-depth Training: Tough Advocacy for Tough Times

Advocacy is at the heart of the independent living movement and
should be the major activity of a strong, high impact independent
living center. Participants will gain tangible productive advocacy
skills, and specific skills and knowledge relative to mental health and
housing advocacy.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Direct Service Staff, Program Managers, and Directors

ATTENDEES WILL GAIN KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS IN:

General advocacy:

  • Be able to verbalize and understand the difference between individual and systems advocacy.
  • Be able to verbalize and understand the difference between peer advocacy and self advocacy.
  • Be able to identify at least two ethical issues that are prevalent in disability advocacy and how to cope with ethical issues.
  • Be able to determine if a specific problem should be solved
    with advocacy at all, and if so if individual, systemic or a
    combination of strategies is appropriate. 

Mental Health advocacy:

  • Be able to verbalize and understand the similarities between the mental health and IL movements.
  • Have a basic understanding of the mental health system and
    regulations that affect publicly funded mental health services.  This
    will include basic rights and processes for addressing problems.
  • Be comfortable implementing at least two concrete strategies to help clients afraid of retaliation.
    Know how to implement at least two concrete strategies related to individual advocacy. 
  • Leave with a specific idea related to their local community
    about a systemic mental health change campaign that they can suggest to
    their IL center mental health clients.

Housing advocacy:

  • Learn about viable housing options from a panel of CIL housing experts.
  • Develop approaches to work with ex-offenders and those who have difficult backgrounds or behaviors to obtain housing.
  • Learn how to work with the community to develop accessible housing options.
